Aim

We wish and we were asked to build musical bridges. Curiosity, tolerance, trying to listen and harmony are our driving force. We just play music with magnificent instruments, given to us, and just playing music means more to us.

You may lean back in the picturesque, well-tempered Church of Caputh and listen to tunes of bells, chimes and further instruments.

Christmas Eve Concert

24th of December 2016, 10pm, in the Church of Caputh

A concert of traditional and new sounds in a quite atmosphere of candlelight and Christmas Tree. The Peace Bell Choir, the Chimes Choir and instrumentalists play a soundtrack for the outro of the Christmas Eve celebrations.

We practise:

every Friday
7:30pm to ∼21:30 Uhr
in our Parish House in Caputh.

We are always happy to welcome visitors & persons interested in ringing & cooperation. In order to learn to ring hand bells it is not necessary to be able to play other instruments.

Caputh & Bell Choir & History

Since 1989, ...

... befor the fall off the Berlin Wall, there has been a handbell choir in

... Caputh, ...

... a village at the edge of Potsdam, a federal capital at the edge of Berlin,

... a village at the river Havel, surrounded by lakes and a tiny, hilly landscape of woods and gardens.

Hand bell choirs are ...

... common in the United States but fairly unknown in Germany as there are other instruments used for the same purpose like brass ensembles.

... an impressive kind of playing music with the focus on cooperation & team spirit & vision. Every Bell is just a tone and the bells & ringers need to be coordinated & tuned.

It was ...

... back in 1987 when the Festival Choir of Fort Wayne toured through Europe. A whole bunch of good luck, faith and coincidences were necessary for them to come to our village, to be curious and to get a warm welcome...

...like it was never expected to be possible under the circumstances of these days.

An impressive concert, intriguing conversations and private visits in living rooms were the seeds of friendship and...

... a plan.

A set of bells and notes and help were collected and reached us 2 years later. Driven by this enthusiasm the Peace Bell Choir was founded in summer 1989...

In our Choir...

anyone is welcome and we are happy to see others.

We are a mix of pensioners and youth, have various origins & our believes have different titles.

We are united in the joy of the music; we aim to share our hopes & cooperate & understand.

We just play music with magnificent instruments, given to us, and just playing music means more to us.

Involvement & Endorsement

For us pitched percussion music and activity for peace and understanding are enabled by honorary commitment and manifold support. We are grateful for all the help composing the Peace Bell Choir and that we may play these beautiful instruments.

Hand Chimes

Weekly, on Fridays...

before the practise session of the Bell Choir another group meets, playing an instrument which also has an exotic aura. Our chimes are played by a younger, vivid choir.

Hand chimes require a quite similar technique to create music, but they are more solid & clear. Every player handles around 2–5 chimes. Moreover, there is a good mixture of experienced and novel players. But the Chimes Choir Caputh is more then just an offspring of the Peace Bell Choir. It's individual fresh character adds more to the tradition of pitched hand percussion music in Caputh — even in concerts together with the Bell Choir.

Their sound...

is softer and more fluent and the way they work is visible directly as they are played.

Especially harmonies of chimes & bells together create a broad, rich sound. But as well they can be combined with other instruments or evolve their pure sound independently. Tone combinations & tunes of hand chimes are usually more than people expect, when they just have the idea of some percussions in their mind.

A short Review:

(A selection)

Our concerts in Summer and at Christmas Eve in the Church of Caputh became something like a tradition for us. They are part of the Christmas celebrations as they are part of Summer time.

Small trips are a chance for us to experience our surroundings and for others they are a chance to get to know our music and us. We were glad to visit the Midwest of the United States just 1 year after the bells were given to us. Furthermore musical bridges were built e.g. to Møn in Denmark to a choir without bells and warm and hospital friends, Karlsbad–Auerbach in the Southwest of Germany, which is our associated parish, to other Bell Choirs e.g. in Gotha, Thuringia and to Chojna in Poland on the occasion of the “Days of Integration, Friendship and Ecumenism”.

Some events which influenced & impressed us, were a meeting of 17 Bell Choirs in Emden 1992, the European Bell Days 2004 in Karlsruhe, a concert in cooperation with the Berlin Children’s Choir in the Berlin Philharmonie, ...
